Geriatrics and geriatric psychiatry are a turning point in their history: major growth in clinical interest and research activity has sparked fresh discoveries in the field. No longer are senility and depression viewed solely as a fate in growing old, an unavoidable concomitant of ageing. This work has been developed in response to major advances in the field.
