This updated textbook provides clinicians with an integrated approach to the pathophysiology, diagnosis, and management of patients with fluid, electrolyte, and acid-base disorders. Containing three new chapters, it presents recent advances in the understanding of these conditions. The book is divided into three sections: the first section delivers detailed guidance for managing patients with specific electrolyte disorders in a fast-access outline format. The second section covers specific clinical conditions in which altered laboratory findings suggest fluid and electrolyte abnormalities. The final section discusses fluid and electrolyte abnormalities in special populations. The three new chapters are entitled "Fluid and Electrolyte Abnormalities in Children", "Fluid and Electrolyte Disorders in the Elderly", and "Fluid and Electrolyte Disturbances in Starvation". There is a comprehensive appendix on the nephron segment characteristics which regulate salt, water and acid-base transport.
