内容説明
After 14 years as an Augustinian Recollect nun, Madre Maria de San Joseph began writing the story of her secular life. She described the 31 years she spent living on her family's hacienda in rural Mexico, focusing on her 21-year struggle to gain admittance to the convent. Her account provides an illuminating account of the social and spiritual difficulties of an aspiring nun in Mexico at the time. In the introduction, Myers discusses the chronology and provenance of the manuscript and gives biographical details of Madre Maria's life. She also assesses the socio-historical value of the domestic scenes which the text portrays and examines its literary qualities.

内容説明
This is the account of the social and spiritual difficulties of an aspirant nun in Mexico at the end of the seventeenth century. In an extensive introduction, Myers discusses the chronology and provenance of Madre Maria's manuscript and gives biographical details of her life; surveys literary aspects of the text; and seeks to show the socio-historical value of the striking scenes of family life which the text offers. Notes and guidance are given on style, orthography and pronunciation; and a bibliographical essay complements a selected bibliography.
