Managing natural resources at a local level has become a crucial issue in many African countries as the degradation of nature is advancing rapidly and governments are increasingly unable to cope with it. Constant economic and political crises mean that fewer resources are at the disposal of governments and they are compelled to call upon local groups to help in halting the degradation process. This study analyzes the success or failure of local groups to sustain and increase the regenerative capacity of their natural resources. Nine case studies taken from throughout Africa illustrate the problems involved.
