Description
This text/atlas is a practical working reference for the full range of abdominal and thoracic procedures. Emphasis throughout is on "how-to-do" techniques, as taught by leading experts. Included for each procedure are anatomy, preoperative planning, intraoperative management and surgical techniques, avoidance and management of complications, and surgical pearls. Each chapter also includes a chapter outline and a list of key words. Coverage begins with a thorough grounding in technological considerations, including instrumentation, video-imaging, anaesthesia and economic as well as environmental considerations. Basic laparoscopic and thorascocopic techniques are then reviewed and clarified - from patient positioning to knot tying and suturing techniques. The next major section focuses on abdominal laparoscopy, including exploratory laparoscopy, gallbladder disease, pancreaticobiliary disease, gastric disease and hernias. The final large section is devoted to thoracoscopy, including exploratory thorascoscopy, sympathectomy, vagotomy, lung resection, oesophageal surgery, pericardiectomy and cardiomyotomy for achalasia.
Future directions in the field are considered in the closing chapters.
