Description

This handbook is a practical guide for all health care professionals who assist patients and families in living with epilepsy: physicians, nurses, social workers, occupational and recreational therapists, psychologists, advocates and vocational counsellors. The book goes beyond diagnosis and treatment to address the problems encountered in living with epilepsy from day to day - such as parenting the child with epilepsy, dealing with epilepsy in school, safety and activities of daily living, employability, adjustment, cultural issues, legal advocacy andaccessing community resources. Valuable strategies are presented for educating patients and families to manage a seizure disorder successfully. Other chapters focus on epilepsy in children, young adults, women, the elderly, and individuals with developmental disabilities. Appendices cover psychosocial nursing diagnosis and interventions, plans of care for inpatients, and seizure recognition and first aid, and list Epilepsy Foundation of America resources and materials.
