This work traces the impact of privatization of state-owned enterprises on management practices and strategies. It covers methods of privatization and the barriers faced by managers, includes case studies of industry and public services in industrialized, developing and former socialist countries, and identifies training needs. It aims to build management development capacity and to prepare managers for the challenges of privatization and a new competitive environment. The book is divided into four parts. Part One covers: the reasons for, and main methods of privatization; the environmental, organizational and human barriers faced by managers; and how to cope with resistance to privatization. Parts Two and Three include a number of case studies on privatization in industry - the Czech Republic, Slovakia, Slovenia and Ukraine - and in public services, such as post offices and telecommunications, public transport and banking (Canada, Guyana, Jamaica, Sri Lanka and Sweden).
Part Four analyzes the implications of privatization and the transition to a market economy, and identifies urgent training needs, as well as strategies for managment development capacity and to prepare managers for the challenges of privatization and a new competitive environment.
