内容説明

The discussion over the position of people resident in Hong Kong and their fate after July 1997 was by no means concluded by intergovernamental arrangements. What implications does the looming transfer of power to the People's Republic of China have for the people of Hong Kong and what do we in Britain need to prepare for? Should we expect a new flood of refugees? This detailed study is based on fieldwork in Hong Kong. It considers the position of the Hong Kong Chinese as well as the special plight of the South Asian minority. A team of researchers has first examined the relevant nationality law provisions to show how Britain has been seeking to protect itself against any fall-out from Hong Kong then provides new evidence about how the residents of Hong Kong themselves have lost trust in Britain's promises and have begun to look elsewhere. Finally, an economic analysis demostrates that it is becoming less and less attractive for the people of Hong Kong to turn to Britain for a secure, prosperous future. Clearly, Britain is no longer, if it ever was, the preferred destination of most families in Hong Kong, but this does not mean that there are no potential implications of the handover of power.
