内容説明

On the face of it, no two nations anywhere in the world are as different in their history, culture, population, language and political and social traditions, as Indonesia and Australia. And yet, in the past decade the relationship between these two nations who share a common boundary has deepened and expanded. At the political and commerical levels, there is now a degree of closeness which would have been well-nigh unimaginable in the mid 1980s. Fifty years after the founding of the Republic of Indonesia, this timely collection of essays surveys a rapidly changing relationship. It provides the political context for the recent agreement on defence cooperation and examines both countries' foreign and defence policies. It examines commercial links and barriers, and considers a shared economic future. It presents the opportunities and challenges offered in the realm of education and culture. It scrutinises such vexed issues as human rights and press freedom. Indonesia is the largest country in Southeast Asia in area and population, the world's largest Muslim nation, and the world's fourth most populous country. It is located in a region of burgeoning economic growth
