"Working with Children and the Children Act" is, above all, a practice guide. The new legislation of the "Children Act 1989" has had considerable implications for all those who work in the social, health or educational services. The emphasis on the child's welfare, on "children in need" and the responsibilities of parents, together with the strong commitment to client participation, directly affects the role of such workers. In this book, the author fillets, interprets and explains the "Children Act" and its implications in the context of the social, psychological and practical help which can be offered. The text provides a means of assessing children's needs - focusing on influences which facilitate or detract from their welfare, as well as providing criteria for judging whether children's needs are being adequately met. Attention is also paid to the assessment of "normal" development and aspects of disability.
