This is a comprehensive review of the present state of knowledge about mental illness in the long-term care setting. Recognised experts in geriatrics provide up-to-date recommendations for the evaluation and treatent of the full range of psychiatric disorders that complicate the care of nursing home residents. Among the topics reviewed in depth are the description, diagnosis, and treatment of depression, anxiety, agitation, sexual dysfunction, sleep disorders, substance abuse, and psychosis. Contemporary strategies for successful psychopharmacologic and psychotherapeutic treatments are discussed in detail.
