As hospital costs escalate and gynaecologists become more skilled at non-invasive techniques, an increasing proportion of diagnostic and therapeutic procedures can be carried out in the office under short-acting or local anesthesia. The second edition of this practical handbook for practicing gynaecologists reflects this change, covering all diagnostic and therapeutic procedures possible in the office setting. This is greatly to the patient's advantage from a psychological, as well as from an economic and logistic, standpoint. The important advances here in terms of new equipment and techniques include laparoscopy for sterilization, biopsy, etc; the use of ultrasound in pregnancy termination, and so on. Many other diagnostic procedures can be performed in the office (such as breast, vulvar and vaginal biopsy; urethrocystoscopy, endometrial biospy, etc) as well as other local therapeutic maneuvers such as conization. This book also covers minor procedures performed in the first trimester of pregnancy, such as amniocentesis.
