Description
Within the religious life of Indian Muslims, the dargah or shrine plays a central role. This study describes the location, architecture, rituals and kinds of worship that occur in the country's major Muslim shrines. It also looks at the sorts of pilgrims that are drawn to the dargah, their aspirations, their faith and their general social and religious outlook. The first essay analyzes the social role that the early Chishti dargahs played in Indian society, while the second and third look at the historical, legendary and administrative aspects of the dargah in Bahraich. There are other essays on Muslim shrines in Patna, Ahmedabad, Delhi, Ajmer, Srinagar and Aligarh.
