This volume cites 1,815 titles that, with few exceptions, were published during the 1987 calendar year. The bibliography lists each work, descriptively annotates all citations, cross-references citations where appropriate, and indexes all authors and editors. A group of 166 contributing bibliographers prepared the citations and annotations for the entries appearing in this volume. The first in an annual series, "The CCCC" "Bibliography "focuses on publications of interest to teachers and researchers in colleges and universities. It includes works that treat written communication, the processes whereby human beings compose and understand written messages, and methods of teaching people to communicate effectively in writing.Entries appear under five major categories: bibliographies and checklists; theory and research; teacher education, administration, social roles; curriculum; testing, measurement, and evaluation. Works are cited from four major sources: periodicals; scholarly presses and commercial publishers; Dissertation Abstracts International (DAI); and Resources in Education (RIE), an ERIC index.

Entries in this present volume include topics with which rhetoricians and compositionists have always concerned themselves. The 1993 volume is, however, the largest "CCCC" "Bibliography "so far, with many of its titles dealing with the relationship of composition and rhetoric to critical theory, gender issues, and cultural studies. This volume also differs from earlier editions in that it contains a new section on electronic discussion groups or listservs, including information on how readers may join the various groups.
