Description
When Cook returned to England in 1771, he knew that the exploration of the South Pacific was far from complete. In particular there were vast areas of this ocean still to be explored, in which an unknown continent might still be found. Cook was duly appointed in command of the Resolution and, with Tobias Furneaux in the Adventure, ordered to `proceed upon further discoveries to the South Pole' to search for the elusive continent. Although the unknown continent proved to be a myth, Cook and his officers carried out a number of important surveys during the voyage.
This volume is a full descriptive catalogue of all the charts and coastal views produced during thevoyage. The introduction contains a synopsis of Cook's surveying and oceanographic activitities during the voyage, an appraisal of his surveying methods, including the performance of the four chronometers, and biographical sketches of surveyors, scientists, draughtsmen and artists involved. Twenty full-colour reproductions accompany an section on the use of colour in work accomplished. A descriptive inventory lists all items catalogued according to theirpresent locations.
