How do we define the concept of "values"? How are our notions of good and bad legitimized? Values are implicit in all human behaviour, underpinning the conventions of the world, and yet their basis is rarely examined. This introduction to the subject places "values" in context of the social sciences. It examines how values, and especially moral values, originate and perpetuate. It analyzes why we think certain things are good and others bad, on whose authority we accept social usages or observe social conventions, and by what criteria we can possibly decide such matters. The book is aimed not only at students in the field of social sciences, but at anyone with a general interest in the subject.
