Description and Table of Contents
Description
Since the publication of DSM-IV in 1994, ICD-9-CM, the coding system used in DSM-IV and the basis for Medicaid and third-party insurance reimbursement, has undergone two revisions, with a third set of changes that will become effective October 1, 1996. The "DSM-IV Coding Update" brings DSM-IV up to date with the revisions to ICD-9-CM. The "Coding Update" is divided into four sections: Section I provides an overall summary of the ICD-9-CM coding changes relevant to DSM-IV and includes changes to the diagnostic codes for the selected general medical conditions that appear in DSM-IV Appendix G. Readers can cut boxed summaries of the coding changes out and paste them in their own copies of DSM-IV. Section II presents coding changes throughout DSM-IV on a page-by-page basis. Readers can use this section to manually revise their personal copies of DSM-IV. Section III contains answers to a number of commonly asked questions about DSM-IV and coding. Section IV includes updated versions of the sections of DSM-IV most often used for coding purposes: the DSM-IV Classification, Appendix E (Alphabetical Listing of DSM-IV Diagnoses and Codes), Appendix F (Numerical Listing of DSM-IV Diagnoses and Codes), and Appendix G (ICD-9-CM Codes for Selected General Medical Conditions and Medication-Induced Disorders).
