内容説明

Shylock and Shakespeare's Venetians have provoked perennial debate about issues of race and gender. Is Shylock presented as a stage villain or a potent reminder of Gentile prejudice! What social order is triumphant in Belmont at the conclusion to the action'? Can (or should) modern audiences, in any case, bear Elizabethan assumptions in mind when now considering the play'? This volume approaches the play from four declared positions within literary criticism (marxist; cultural materialist; feminist; and deconstructionist). It illustrates how complex critical theories might affect critical practice in detail; and illuminates both The Merchant of Venice and the theories themselves. The spread of perspectives has been carefully chosen with modern cultural and critical concerns in mind. A select bibliography and essay introductions by the volume editor help those new to theory to assimilate and apply it in reading or seeing the play.
