Description

New array detector technology is currently greatly enhancing results in a wide range of fields. It is extremely interdisciplinary, affecting the work of researchers in astronomy, biology, chemistry and physics. The uses to which it is put include low light imaging and extraction of low contrast images, as well as several spectroscopic applications. The new technology is particularly important to those involved in the manufacture of imaging devices, optical components and systems. This new book takes an in-depth look at the latest developments in this exciting new technology, describing processes and instrumentation now available. Particular emphasis is given to a new generation of CCDs which are designed to give scientific grade performance at high speed. Several devices, in particular those with multiple parallel amplifiers, optimized pixel architecture, and specialized readout, are described. The book also includes chapters devoted to overcoming the problems of applying CTDs to spectroscopic applications. Recent Developments in Scientific Optical Imaging provides a comprehensive insight into the latest research in the field of scientific imaging and optical spectroscopy. Particular emphasis has been given to exploring the industrial applications of the technology. It should be essential reading for researchers in universities, laboratories and observatories who work in this field.
