Description
Gross expenditure on criminal legal aid in the magistrates' courts and Crown Court increased from #333 million in 1990-91 to #469 million in 1994-95. In this report the National Audit Office have reviewed the means testing arrangemnts at 20 magistrates' courts and examined a representative sample of 1080 means assessments. The sample was sufficient to enable statistically valid conclusions to be drawn about the award of criminal legal aid by all the courts.
