This work is a revised and updated work, with 36 additional descriptions and 12 colour illustrations incorporated. Features detailed in formation on all known butterflies in the Southern African region: their description; distribution; habitat; habits; and larval foods. The illustrations of all known species and subspecies are mostly life-size. Forty detailed life history paintings by Gowan Clarke are included. This second edition also features facsimile reproductions of the 20 radio talks given by Ken Pennington in 1965; and short biographies on some of the colourful personalities amongst Southern African lepidopterists such as George Arnold and Margaret Fountaine who shook off her conventional Victorian upbringing to travel the world, inspiring two books and having four butterflies named after her.
