Description
Every year the Mediterranean attracts more than 100 million visitors, but relatively few of them stop to think of the environmental problems facing the area. The millions of tonnes of crude oil, chemicals and untreated sewage being discharged into the sea, form a toxic cocktail that is threatening the entire marine ecosystem. Drawing on the expertise of a multi-national team of writers and researchers, this book examines the geography and unique natural history of the Mediterranean, the threat to its immense natural resources, and the politics that shape the area's future. There are special features, accompanied by landscape and wildlife photography, on each of the 18 Mediterranean states, and the book ends with a look at what has already been achieved in environmental protection and at Greenpeace's own involvement.
