China has experienced tremendous change during the era of the People's Republic, particularly during the past 15 years, a period in which it has begun a shift from a centrally planned economy to a market-oriented system. This book, based on the international symposium, attempts to form a picture of the landscape of China in the 21st century. It opens with the keynote addresses by Rong Yiren, vice-president of China, and Helmut Schmidt, former Chancellor of Germany. The second part of the book is devoted to considerations of the Chinese economy, management, and politics and society in the 21st century.
