Janet Payne Bowles (1872/73ETH1948) was an Arts and Crafts jeweler and metalsmith who worked in Boston, New York, and Indianapolis and enjoyed an international reputation during her lifetime. As a woman earning a living by creating metalwork at the turn of the century, she stands out as an extraordinary individual. This luxuriously illustrated catalog, the first survey of her life and work, reproduces seventy objects by Payne Bowles from the collection of the Indianapolis Museum of Art. The catalog includes a biographical overview by Barry Shifman, a discussion of her professional life in the context of the role of women in the Arts and Crafts movement by Sharon S. Darling, and an analysis of her artistry by W. Scott Braznell.
