Description and Table of Contents

Description

The main objective of this paper is to explain the role of agriculture in economic development using insights derived from diverse theories of economic growth, with special emphasis on "endogenous growth theories". Such theories emphasize the importance of human capital and learning by doing for long-term growth. Theories of economic growth are discussed critically as well as their implications for agriculture and the role of agriculture in economic development. The main conclusion is that agricultural economics have already gone a long way in incorporating human factors and that little has been gained, so far, from new theories.
