This much-needed book examines and discusses geriatric education, emphasizing the urgent need to prepare social workers for helping the growing population of elderly clients. It pulls together various issues, concerns, and emerging program developments in gerontological social work education and looks for an approach that integrates knowledge from a variety of disciplines. Geriatric Social Work Education expands the awareness of social work educators, in both academic and practice settings, of the great need for increased geriatric knowledge by all social workers at all levels of expertise. Through discussions of curricula issues and actual curriculum content ideas, this book encourages social work faculty to develop their own knowledge of the field and serves as a foundation upon which educators and fieldwork instructors can build courses that incorporate more aging content. Full of practical guidelines and assistance, Geriatric Social Work Education helps readers strengthen the quantity and quality of geriatric education in social work schools and continuing education offerings. This book does not attempt to be all-encompassing but focuses mainly on the frail and old old (persons over eighty-five years) who require a greater degree of assistance than younger, healthier elderly. Geriatric Social Work Education is divided into three sections. Issues and Trends focuses on education for social work in various settings. Curriculum Development, includes chapters on curricula for clinical practice, case management, and nursing home care. Finally, chapters in Interdisciplinary Geriatric Education describe an interdisciplinary faculty development program and examine the challenges and advantages of this approach. This vital book is a useful supplementary text for courses on the life cycle or work with the aging, as well as an extremely practical guide for educators. Practitioners will also find the information on current practice issues immediately applicable in their daily work.
