As the level of recorded rape offences has risen, so has the concern and disquiet surrounding the crime. The author addresses the issue by examining the offences which were reported to the police in the London boroughs of Islington and Lambeth during the years 1984-1986 and constructing a "profile of rape". While the study does not come up with any blueprints or easy answers it concludes that a key to prevention may lie in the encouragement of women who have been raped to report the offences to the police - no matter how well they may know their attacker.
