In an integrated global economy, poor countries have to compete to attract foreign investment. The social, economic and environmental rights of ordinary people are often sacrificed to the strategic interests of transnational corporations. Part of the "Insight" series, which presents evidence to support the advocacy work of Oxfam (UK/I) on behalf of poor communities - work which is central to the agency's relief and development programme in over 70 countries - this work examines the impact of rapid trade liberalization on the livelihoods of poor communities and recommends ways in which their rights could be protected.
