内容説明
This proceedings, ""Applications and Advanced Technologies in Transportation Engineering"", consists of extended abstracts of papers presented at the Second International Conference held in Minneapolis, Minnesota, August 18-21, 1991. It is concerned with the challenges and opportunities faced by the transportation engineering profession as it prepares to enter the 21st century. While these challenges cover a wide spectrum including increasing congestion, continuing problems with safety and environmental degradation, and acute budget constraints, technical innovations offer opportunities to address these problems. Major advances in the fields of automation, information systems, and telecommunications have the potential of opening new horizons in transportation engineering by developing new products and procedures while making substantial improvements in cost savings and productivity. The papers focus on such topics as: automatic vehicle monitoring, advanced traveler information systems, image processing and vehicle detection, real-time traffic control, advanced rail systems, and automated incident detection. In addition, these papers present specific applications of these different technologies and national and state programs with particularly important results, including SHRP innovation projects.
