This volume stems from an international meeting on angiotensin converting enzyme inhibition which was held in London from 14th-17th February 1989. Leading researchers worldwide representing both basic and clinical science have contributed to an interdisciplinary approach to the subject of ACE inhibition. The 52 chapters contain contributions ranging from molecular biology to various clinical aspects of treatment with ACE inhibitors. Part one of the book provides current state-of-the-art papers recognised by experts in the field. The subject matter covers all aspects of ACE inhibition, and includes data relating to the potential use of ACE inhibitors, not only as conventional therapy in hypertension and heart failure, but also highlights areas of research relating to the recognition of renin-angiotensin systems in many organs and tissues outside the kidney, which clearly raises the possibilities of new targets for action of ACE inhibitors. The subject of vascular growth and the role of trophic factors including angiotensin is covered by several authors, and the concept of reversal by hypertrophy both vascular and myocardial with ACE inhibitors is considered.
It also looks at aspects of ACE inhibition relating to protection of the kidney, diabetes, the ageing process, tumour growth, and lastly some insight into actions on the brain in relation to learning. The clinical use of ACE inhibitors is also well reviewed. Part two consists of papers based upon peer reviewed communications presented at the meeting and provides a bird's eye view of the breadth and depth of research currently being undertaken in this field.
