内容説明

There are few artists whose work and personality have given rise to such wide-ranging opinions interpretations and far-fetched theories as those of Hieronymus Bosch. Art historians have to shed any preconceived notions in their approach to the problems of Bosch's work; apart from a thorough knowledge of the late-medieval period and a sound methodology they also have to display a healthy academic reserve. Roger-H. Marijnissen published a substantial book on Bosch in 1972 in co-operation with specialists from a number of disciplines. Since that time he has continued to study the work of the great Brabant painter and has closely followed the development of research in the field. This new edition includes an overview of archive material relating to the life of Bosch a critical catalogue a review of interpretations propounded since the sixteenth century and the author's own provisional interpretation. All of the acknowledged works are reproduced in colour with an abundance of detail; in other words this book also serves as a picture book to guide the reader into the world of Hieronymus Bosch.
