Educators from all over Europe are responding to the EU's requirement that its education systems should "encourage all young Europeans to see themselves as citizens of their regions and countries but also as citizens of Europe and of the wider world". This book provides practical guidance to teachers and schools seeking to put these recommendations into practice, drawing on the expertise of teacher educators from across Europe. The contributors have been part of the EC-funded curriculum development project: Education for citizenship in a new Europe - learning democracy, social justice, global responsibiliy and respect for human rights. They come from France, Germany, Ireland, Italy, the Netherlands, Russia, Slovenia, Spain, and the UK. They examine the values needed for teaching in pluralist societies and offer effective approaches for developing active citizensip and global responsibility in schools. The book is designed for teachers and teacher educators who are concerned to promote justice and equality in education, and for student teachers who will be teaching in European schools in the next century.
