Description
A comprehensive reference to the current understanding of solid-earth geophysics, chapters are based on papers presented at the SEDI (Structure of the Earth's Deep Interior) meeting in Canada 1994. The papers represent a synopsis of the current thinking behind a number of large, mostly unsolved, problems such as the detailed mechanism whereby the Earth's magnetic field is maintained, the question of the physical and chemical nature of the core mantle boundary (CMB), and the nature of the convection in the mantle that drives the surface tectonic plates.
Table of Contents
1. Lateral Heterogeneity in the Lowermost Mantle 2. The Temperature in the Earth's Core 3. Prospectives on Core Dynamics from Laboratory Experiments 4. Constraints on the Earth's Deep Structure and Dynamics from Superconducting Gravimetry 5. Core-Mantle Interactions 6. Phase Transformations and Rheological Properties of Mantle Minerals 7. Effects of Phase Transitions on Three-Dimensional Mantle Convection 8. The Dynamics of the 670Km Seismic Discontinuity 9. The Geodynamo 10. Seismic-Geodynamic Constraints on Vertical Flow Between the Upper and Lower Mantle 11. Probing the Earth's Core with Geomagnetism 12. The Influence of Phase Transformations on Mantle Mixing and Plate Tectonics
