In addition to a chapter covering Alzheimer's biography, this book deals with historical views of dementia in the 18th and the 19th centuries, from the points of view of British, French and German workers. The epidemiology of Alzheimer's disease is discussed, together with social aspects of the problem, including care of and responsibility for those suffering from dementia. Other sections are devoted to the vascular dementias, subcortical dementia and other forms of dementia. A chapter on the portrayal of dementia in Shakespeare's "King Lear" concludes this wide-ranging volume.
