内容説明
Man has long been aware that his industrial, agricultural and social activities have adverse effects on the chemical composition of the atmosphere, and consequent adverse environmental and health effects, but it is only recently that sufficient effort and resources have been devoted to the study of air pollution to allow quantitative assessments of these effects. The United Kingdom is unique in that it is an island state with a long industrial and post industrial economic history, with a high population density, a varied climate, and an extensive array of legislation and legal precedent referring to air pollution. The country has experienced a wide range of air pollution problems over the centuries, from the poisonous sulfurous smogs of the 19th century, to the deposition of this century's "acid rain". All of these factors make the UK an ideal "case study" for the assessment of air pollution. This book gives a brief but authoritative and up-to-date overview of air pollution in the UK. It describes the major air pollution problems facing the country, illustrated in part with data provided by the national monitoring networks. Air Pollution in the United Kingdom is written in a concise and easy-to-read style that will appeal to the general non-specialist reader with an interest in the environment, as well as to the researcher and policy-maker.
