Intended as a handy, inexpensive reference work providing concise and accessible information, this dictionary contains some 4350 biographies in an A-Z format, representing a wide-ranging selection of figures from all periods, countries, and spheres of activity including: medicine; the military; music; politics; religion; science; sport; and many other fields. A special feature of the book is its coverage of 20th-century personalities, science, and popular culture. Each entry gives important facts about a persons life and work, including the subjects life dates and pronunciation guidance on his or her name. The entries also put into context the significance of each subject to his or her period or field. A "Quick Reference" supplement presents additional information in tabular form on the kings and queens of England and the United Kingdom, Prime Ministers of the UK, Canada, New Zealand, and Australia, along with Presidents of the USA.
