Covering the early and later period, this book provides a synthesis of research to date, including archaeological evidence, excavated and above ground, historical sources and the work undertaken by art and architectural historians. The book is intended for undergraduates, as well as scholars, seeking information on urban and rural building types, regional differences and the latest thinking on the use of space within buildings. Its focus is on buildings of lower status (those of higher status and religious buildings being covered by other volumes in the series) in the British Isles, with European material introduced for comparative purposes.
