Description

A complex artist and an active intellectual, the Italian painter Renato Guttuso was frequently at the centre of polemic and debate during his lifetime. This monograph, published to accompany an exhibition at the Whitechapel Art Gallery in London, and the Civiche Gallerie, Ferrera, draws attention to his work's intensely pictorial quality and expressive energy, and reconstructs his trajectory as a painter in 20th-century art. It reconstructs the relations between Guttuso and Italian writers, and describes his complicated relationship with London, its critics and its public in the 1950s.
