内容説明
This book provides a detailed investigation into nursing as a therapeutic activity. It is an interpretative study of how nurses and patients construe the effects of nursing for patients. Ethnographic techniques are used to build up a picture of the micro-sociology of nursing. A conceptual framework of nursing action highlights the therapeutic importance, not only of what nurses do, but of how they act with patients. The book covers new ground in providing a detailed interpretative model of nursing as a therapeutic activity, by developing the sociology of the emotional impact of nursing on patients, and by providing a sociological model of the way in which patients evaluate the nursing care they receive. The study contributes to the development of nursing theory on the issue of therapeutic interaction by nurses. It addresses contemporary concerns regarding the study of health care outcomes, and in particular, how qualitative research can help in the development of patient-defined outcome measurement.
