内容説明

For the fourth time in 17 years, librarians, authors, educators and publishers from around the world assembled to exchange information about children's books and culture within the 38 countries of the Pacific Rim. The papers presented emphasize children's entitlements, their literature, and the forms it is currently taking. Essays on such topics as children's needs and wishes; mass media, animation, and "manga" (comic books); and new methods of introducing literature to children explicate the theme. Included are the keynote addresses by cultural anthropologist Masao Yamaguchi, author Yoshitomo Imae, professor of education Lee Sang Keum, New Zealand author Dorothy Butler, author Keiko Ochiai, Canadian author and librarian Sarah Elizabeth Ellis, U.S. author Virginia Hamilton, philosopher Shunsuke Tsurumi, and publisher and critic Tadashi Matsui. Also included are summary discussions of the roundtable sessions and highlights of the workshops held throughout the conference. Representing the works and thoughts of some of the leading voices in children's literature in the Pacific Rim, these proceedings provide unique insight into the cultural and educational issues that educators, authors and publishers are facing in this broad geographic area.
