Description
The Fell Pony is an ancient breed, established in Roman times. When it evolved from the indigenous ponies of northern England crossed with the Friesian stallions imported in broad and deep-bodied merchant ships from Friesland, then a province of some note. The breed is increasingly appreciated both in the UK and abroad for its versatility as a riding and driving pony, as well as its value in cross-breeding. Clive Richardson, writer, breeder and judge of the Fell pony, traces the history of the breed through the centuries, describes the work of the studs and the breed society, and evaluates its performance, place and future in the modern world.
