This volume presents the results of two studies of the Pollution and Insurance Working Party of the International Law Association (AIDA). Issues relating to forum shopping and salvage costs in the field of pollution insurance are examined in a number of jurisdictions worldwide. The first study has its genesis in the proposition that pollution does not respect national frontiers. Accidents occurring in one country can cause pollution and economic loss in many more countries. The contributors to this work present an analysis of matters relating to jurisdiction, applicable law, material law as to bases of liability and "locus standi", procedure and enforcement, and questions concerning disclosure of insurance to plaintiffs. The pollution incidents often lead to demands for reimbursement of clean-up expenses. These are regulalary covered in principle as "sue and labour" expenses in the field of marine insurance, though sometimes subject to sub-limits of indemnity and specific exclusions. The position is far less clear in non-marine insurance. The second study examines the current practice in countries where salvage costs are treated under binding legal rules, insurance clauses and by courts and jurispudence.
