Growing up with Science examines the need to tackle scientific literacy from the beginning of education in the primary school and even in the pre-school period, so that at every stage of education asking questions about life and the physical world are regarded as important - as are the means by which answers to these questions are obtained. Its main aims are:
* to examine ways of improving science education for children from the earliest years
* to examine ways of improving science education for children from the earliest years
* to suggest the changes needed in European pre-school and primary school education.
A wide range of issues is covered from basic developmental psychology, through pedagogics with practical examples from current practice, to implementation and evaluation.
The contributors' goal is to find a way to inculcate the logical approach to understanding that is characteristic of science, with ideas and examples carefully selected to provide the grasp of important principles. This sound basis will help the child grow into a citizen capable of dealing critically with new propositions encountered throughout life.
