Description
This is a narrative history of the major figures, influential movements and landmark buildings which have defined American architecture in the 20th century. It focuses mainly on great architecture, and addresses both artistic and practical issues such as architectural preservation and financial constraints. The author discusses the triumph of modernism, the growth of architectural preservation, the eclipse of the the practical arts by money, theory and abstraction, and the uncertain future of architecture in a country which celebrates both individualism and community.
