内容説明

'The excellence of this collection stems from the brilliant scholarly and critical attitudes of its contributors. The importance of the collection is threefold: it introduces in English translation the work of three German scholars noted for their contributions to nineteenth-century music studies; it provides provocative scholarly-critical interpretations that far outstrip the conventional 'impressionistic' approaches of the past; it demonstrates a new approach to critical interpretation of Schubert's music. It is, in sum, a contribution of outstanding quality' - Richard Swift, University of California at Davis. Addressing a wide range of topics - from Schubert's approach to large-scale musical form to his innovations in instrumental forms and Lieder - Schubert offers a diverse, illuminating portrait of the composer and his music. The contributors to the volume include distinguished scholars Joseph Kerman, Edward T. Cone, David Lewin, Walter Frisch, David Brodbeck, William Kinderman, Lawrence Kramer, and Anthony Newcomb. There are also translations of writings by the influential German critics Carl Dahlhaus, Thrasybulos Georgiades, and Arnold Feil. Walter Frisch is a professor in the Department of Music at Columbia University. He is the author of "The Early Works of Arnold Schoenberg".
