This volume of the "Calendar of Inquisitions Post Mortem" covers the second half of the reign of Henry IV during which time a number of large estates fell to be examined by the royal escheators, despite being a period of comparative peace. John, earl of Somerset, the king's half-brother died in 1410, Edmund, earl of Kent, grandson of Joan, princess of Wales, was killed in 1408, and the wide holdings of the Mowbrays were again surveyed owing to the death of Thomas, the Earl Marshal. This volume also reveals that about a quarter of the tenants in chief whose estates were surveyed in these years were women, mainly widows with broad holdings. Apart from inquisitions the volume includes a large number of proof of age of heirs claiming their inheritance, which illustrate the importance of the parish church as the centre of village life particularly as a meeting place for settling disputes.
