Description and Table of Contents

Description

The purpose of this journal is to give a new direction and depth to a political, cultural and economic debate in Britain. It aims to explore the possibilities of a non-conservative order, and of the re-invention of the socialist tradition. Apart from the special launch edition, each issue deals in depth with a particular theme. This launch issue of "Soundings" includes: Stuart Hall's analysis of the dilemmas facing both New Labour and the Conservatives; Beatrix Campbell's feminist critique of the new lads of communitarianism; Simon Edge on the vagaries of the gay consumerism; Fred Halliday's interpretation of the new international politics; and Mae Wan-Ho on gene biotechnology and the patenting of life. Other contributors to this issue include Andrew Blake, Barbara Castle, Ingrid Pollard and Lola Young.
