Description and Table of Contents
Description
This volume presents the report of a study commissioned by the Department of Social Security. The aim of the study was to provide detailed information about structures of social assistance in four European countries, distinguishing between policy-making, finances, delivery and accountability. The strengths and weaknesses of each system were evaluated, common and divergent trends noted and their applicability (or otherwise) to the UK explored. The DSS found the study to be useful in informing a debate about the advantages and risks of "going local" with the British system. There is growing concern with social assistance schemes internationally, and this publication aims to provide original information about the European schemes.
