Description and Table of Contents

Description

The first international, transmedia art movement of this century, Fluxus is recalled enthusiastically in this special edition of "Art & Design" by a number of original members including Emmett Williams, John Cage, Rene Block, Jackson Mac Low and Robert Filliou. In the early years of the 1960s, Fluxus took the traditional art world by storm and has survived three decades of ever-changing trends. The movement believed in the performing arts where inspiration could be drawn from the spiritual responses of the audience where stimulation and change were the only constants. The group, who considered themselves a collective of artists, worked predominantly in America and Germany though their shows travelled around the globe. George Maciunas was the leading light of the various individuals who included Joseph Beuys, Yoko Ono, John Cage and Nam June Paik. Guest edited by Johann Pijnappel, this work comprises a mixture of articles, interviews and letters providing the reader with a fascinating variety of information. An extensive range of original archive material illustrates the rich and informative text.
