The scope of the Crime (Sentences) Act 1997 includes the abolition of the system of automatic early release and parole, automatic life sentences for second convictions for serious sexual or violent offences, and the imposition of minimum sentences for repeat offenders convicted of domestic burglary or drug trafficking. This work explains the practical effort of these changes and consists of an analytical commentary followed by the fully annotated text of the Act.
